Undermain got its moniker from an observation among friends: that a lot of art was happening in Lexington, Kentucky, but under the mainstream of media recognition. Thus: “Undermain.” In 2013, those friends — Christine Huskisson, Art Shechet, and Tom Martin, pooled resources, talents and energies to establish this 501(c)(3) non-profit online arts magazine. Over the course of a decade, they have supported many among Lexington's community of excellent writers, engaging them to provide previews and reviews, studio visits, profiles and Q&A interviews.

In 2024, Huskisson and Shechet turned their attention to other demands on their time and energies, and Undermain management transitioned to Martin as publisher and senior editor, Sheila Kenny as managing editor, and Katy Conway as editor, each serving on a volunteer basis in a spirit of civic engagement. Laura Daley was recruited to produce social media reels to promote each new article.

The Undermain team of contributing writers is ever-expanding as the magazine strives to keep arts lovers well-informed about the exceptional creative eco-system of Lexington, Kentucky.

Undermain, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit arts organization. Serving as our fiscal agent is the Blue Grass Community Foundation in Lexington, Kentucky. Undermain works in partnership with the WEKU weekly, Eastern Standard and Dynamix Productions.
